Tobacco Control of Elkhart County

Our Mission

To create, within our community, the belief that tobacco use is physically and financially harmful and, therefore, socially unacceptable.

Our Goal

To prevent and reduce the use of all tobacco products in Elkhart County and protect our residents from exposure to secondhand or environmental tobacco smoke.

Tobacco Control of Elkhart County Coalition meets the second Monday of the month from 2-3 pm at the Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center Conference Room 6 at 200 East Jackson Blvd. Elkhart, IN 46516. These meetings are open to the public.

Priority Areas

DECREASE YOUTH TOBACCO USE RATES

Middle & High School Comprehensive School Strategy
ECHD educates middle and high school communities about tobacco issues and cessation services through messaging (articles, fact sheets, Vape-Free Indiana, etc.), school staff training, and information sessions with parent groups.

VOICE Logo

Youth Empowerment – VOICE

ECHD recruits a core team of youth to lead VOICE branded initiatives in their community. The core team engages in youth empowerment and engagement opportunities, educating their peers on tobacco-related issues to increase community activism and support community change.

Point-of-Sale
ECHD conducts youth and adult-focused education on how tobacco products are priced and marketed to target teens and the impact of tobacco promotion at the point of sale. In addition, ECHD participates in the Standardized Tobacco Assessment for Retail Settings (STARS) survey to collect county-level data on tobacco products and point-of-sale advertising in retail establishments.

Breathe Easy Indiana

Smoke-Free Communities
ECHD works and advocates for the proportion of local and/or statewide comprehensive smoke-free air ordinances for worksites. Breathe Easy Indiana

Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing
ECHD works and advocates for the proportion of comprehensive smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing, including public housing and market-rate multi-resident buildings. Smoke-Free Housing

DECREASE ADULT SMOKING RATES

ECHD conducts outreach with healthcare providers, organizations, and employers to increase the utilization of the Quit Now Indiana throughout the state.

ECHD works and advocates for tobacco cessation benefits provided by employers and tobacco-free grounds policies. Quit Now Indiana

MAINTAIN A STATE AND LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE NECESSARY TO LOWER TOBACCO USE RATES

Coalition
ECHD participates in local and statewide coalitions, conducting ongoing coalition development and recruitment activities focusing on outreach to organizations that serve Elkhart County. Tobacco Control of Elkhart County

Tobacco-Free Families
ECHD trains staff at Head Start Centers, and alternative family settings on the education program Breathe Healthy Steps to Living Tobacco Free. Breathe Curriculum
