The Health Officer is entrusted with the responsibility of addressing the public health concerns of Elkhart County. This is accomplished through the various divisions and programs of the Health Department. Our mission, and the mission of all health departments throughout the United States, is to promote a healthy life and lifestyle by increasing the quality and years of healthy life and eliminating health disparities. We carry out our mission in association with the Indiana State Department of Heath, the Center for Disease Control, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other governmental and public health agencies.

A health administrator handles staffing, training, and creating a supportive workplace while also directly tackling the community's health issues by identifying community needs and directing the department to meet those needs. The duties include planning, managing resources, working with other organizations, and ensuring high-quality services are easy to access. Health Administrators also collect and analyze health data to make smart choices, shape health programs, and push for policies that keep the community healthy.
